This is: how you replace a thermostat for a gas heating type air conditioner.

Make sure the power to the fau is off.

Remove the cover from the thermostat and write down which color wires go to which thermostat terminals.

If the red wire is in the R terminal that’s standard color code but sometimes they might be using brown for the G terminal or any combination. As long as the wire you pull off the R terminal from old thermostat gets put in the R terminal of the new thermostat.

Standard color code for a single stage gas thermostat is

  • Red to R which is 1 side of 24 volt power
  • White to W which is for heat
  • Yellow to Y which is for cooling
  • Green to G which is for circulating or blower fan. If there is no green, its common to use brown instead.

If you cannot find these colors or if the current thermostat is using a different arrangement of colors, that’s ok just wire the new thermostat exactly like the old one. Like stated above.

Un-screw all the thermostat wires with a small thermostat screwdriver.

Remove the screws holding thermostat to the wall and pull it off the wall.

Now spull your new thermostat apart, it should snap apart down the middle.

Mount the back piece to the wall and make sure it is level.

Now put all the wires back to the same terminals they were in on the old thermostat.

Put batteries in the front cover

Put the front cover on top the back plate of stat

Turn the power to the fau back on and turn your stat on cool-auto-60 degrees because you may be done.

This air conditioner has been fixed, But before you celebrate go to end test page and make sure you are done, by checking the temperatures.
