So the air conditioner looks and sounds like it is on but, the home is not cool.

So ask yourself this. Why is my home so hot? Why does my air conditioner not cool the home even though it looks on?

The air conditioning unit sounds like it is on. So, if you home is not getting cool we must have a refrigeration problem that is in need of repair.

But keep one thing in mind, “it is very common for an individual to hear an ac running, see the condenser motor spinning. But, the compressor may not be on and the sound may just be the motor”.

So the first thing were going to check is; is the compressor on or off?

Remove the air conditioners electrical panel.

Put an amp probe on the thick 120 volt common wire of the compressor.

(Note: If your compressor is in fact on, then it will be puling between 3-25 amps depending on size and refrigerant charge.)

If your compressor is on and pulling power between 3-25 amps then we know the compressor is on. This tells us you have a refrigeration issue so grab your gauges.

No, the compressor is not on or pulling any power so you know it didn’t start.
