This is “How to install a hard start kit on a central air conditioner”.

Ok a Kick start or Hard Start Kit or SPP6 or SPP8 those are all devices that will give the compressor a little bump of energy at the very start just to get it going. They can save an air conditioner by helping a compressor start that would not normally start on its own. Or, if a compressor is fine a hard start kit will make it last as long as possible. Or, at least your chances of failing due to hard start or lock rotor are greatly reduced.

If a compressor is pulling high amps on start this is your answer.

Now let’s go install a hard start kit.

Make sure the power is off.

Now wrap the kit with plumbers tape and secure it the inside of the air conditioners electrical panel.

Now this next step could get complicated so listen close.

There are 2 wires coming out of the hard start kit.

They both go to the capacitor, one to C and one to H and that’s it you’re done, C and H.

(Note if your kit has a third box in between just screw it the inside electrical panel and follow all the same instructions.)

When you re start the ac use your amp probe to check new starting amps and see how much it helped.

Now you have done all you can for this compressor, if it still pulls high starting amps then leave the kit and know your compressor is not long in this world. Think about a compressor replacement soon. On step 22

And after your done installing the kit no matter how well it helped, we want to check the refrigerant levels as a precaution. Move to step 18 now.
